In the critical essay of Katherine Kearns, Edna's death and awakening of the soul can be symbolized as death as well as birth. This idea is well presented throughout the essay. Katherine Kearns reflects the swimming scene as a birth of her self awareness but also as a downfall because Edna discovers the "I". By this it is meant that this scene shows Edna a idea of self and the autonomy of herself. The article also talks about Edna having to transcend into the masculine world and fend for herself. This idea forces her to be self able and increases he idea of the "I". This essay also connects the moment she rises above the water and her society she drowns. This proves the thesis but showing Edna's goal of birth into a higher state of mind to the physical death of her body. This essay also brings up the idea of Edna believing she lives a rich life even though she decides to die. I agree with this essays stand point. I find the idea of Edna's rebirth in physical death to be a fascinating idea. To be honest I felt that this essay and most of its ideas went way over my head.
